Instructor:
Tanya Yermolayev (Russian art historian)
Elisabeth N. Aanes (Nordphotography)

Location we will photograph in:
  • Prince Vladimir palace: was the last imperial palace to be constructed in St. Petersburg. Build for the son of Alexander the II. It has an eclectic style and is today one of the most authentic one left in St.Petersburg
  • Vitebsky railroad station: the first railway station to be built in St. Petersburg and the whole of the Russian Empire.
  • Streets of St.Petersburg: exploring the Dostoyevsky part of the city, close to his apartment and the market.
  • Small Fortress of Paul I – a fortress build by the order of Emperor Paul 1. The fortress, which is complete with towers and a drawbridge, was included in the military register of fortresses of the Russian Empire.
  • Parks and pavilions in Pavlovsk - one of the finest examples of landscape gardening

We invite you to visit Russia this fall. We will spend 3 days in St. Petersburg exploring the Dostoyevsky part of the city, close to his apartment and the market. And 3 days in Pavlovsk, shooting in the unique park and pavilions of this historic area. In Pavlovsk the group will stay in the former Small Fortress of Paul I.

We will use models/ dancers, for some of the shoots, but also do street photography and photograph local people.

We will shoot each day at different locations, and each evening there will be image critic lead by Elisabeth N. Aanes from NORDphotography. Our Russian Art Historian and pristine guide Tanya Yermolayev will present the history of each location the day before we visit.

St.Petersburg is reflected in the works of Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Alexander Pushkin and many other famous writers and poets. Also described by Dostoyevsky, is Pavlovsk, a former residence of the Russian imperial family, and a place Dostoyevsky frequently visited in his novel The Idiot.

In Pavlovsk we will be surrounded by historical palaces, parks and pavilions designed by famous architects. The railway in this area was the first railway in Russia, and connected Pavlovks with St Petersburg. As a meen to promote the railway, the train terminal of Pavlovsk was built in 1836–1838 as an entertaining center. It then regularly hosted evening festivities, and Johann Strauss II (1856), Franz Liszt, Robert Schumann and Feodor Chaliapin were among the celebrities who performed there.

This is a workshop that will give you a unique insight into the Russian history, as well as access to exclusive locations. While in St Petersburg and Pavlovsk we will seek to find some of the places that great artist before us has used as inspiration to their work, and maybe discover ourselves along the way.
